This study programme is consecutive to our International Bachelor of Applied Chemistry (8 semester, 240 ECTS Credit Points). We also want to encourage external applicants with a relevant chemical background. It leads to advanced expertise in the field of analytical sciences, representing the state of the art in this area of study.

The lectures will cover the following topics:

  • proteins, nucleic acids and viruses, polysaccharides and lipids, 3D-structure elucidation of biomolecules, critical comparison of methods;
  • major legal requirements concerning the development, registration, production, trade and investigation/examination of pharmaceuticals/drugs;
  • analysis of pharmaceutical product environment, packaging materials, containers, devices, raw materials, active ingredients and drugs;
  • advanced analytical techniques;
  • clinical and forensic analysis.

All lectures will be accompanied by laboratory classes with real-life application examples. Students will be able to evaluate, select and apply appropriate methods to analytical problems and justify their choices. Modern instrumental analytical equipment and advanced analytical techniques, for instance linear ion trap ESI-MS/MS, MALDI-ToF-MS, Q-ToF, DNA sequencer will be applied to various matrices and types of samples. In the experimental work on which the written Master‘s thesis is based, students will apply the acquired knowledge in complex and multidisciplinary contexts. Results of the thesis must be presented and defended verbally.

This two-semester Master’s course provides a research-oriented scientific degree that particulary qualifies a student for a career in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry, at a chemical research institute or authority.
Fast and precise analytical methods are highly appreciated in R&D, quality control, in production, or in regulatory approval tasks of leading chemical and pharmaceutical companies. Moreover quality control often requires the mindset of a detective. In order to determine which starting material is causative for a specific defect, for a wrong taste, a slightly different mechanical behaviour, a faster discoloration, you need to have a wide range of analytical methods and techniques at your command. The more background knowledge and experience you have, the more conclusive are your findings - a key to your success in industry.

Another important field of application is environmental monitoring. In order to trace the fate of man made compounds and assess their impact on the quality of ground and surface water, soils, plants and animals, we need to look beneath the surface. For example, researchers at the Hochschule Fresenius have proven, that barbiturates, widely used as sedative hypnotics in the mid-1960s, show high stability both under biotic and abiotic degradation conditions.

With a method based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) the drugs are still being detected in surface and groundwater in Germany, although the use of these substances peaked more than three decades ago.
In our Master‘s course, you will attain the knowledge needed to conduct such kinds of research work, for which there is and will be ample needs, both in industry and public service.

Teaching Methods:

You will benefit from teaching in small groups at the Hochschule Fresenius, an intimate learning environment, and develop a close relationship with the lecturers and professors. Seminars, workshops and practical trainings facilitate active learning, supported by modern communication media and e-learning. Theoretical and practical approaches complement each other.
A comprehensive, holistic approach covering the whole analytical process from starting question to conclusive answer, including clean-up, selection of method and quality assurance, will be taught and applied throughout all selected case studies.

In close collaboration with various industrial partners in Germany and abroad, we have developed a degree course scheme that provides you with a specialist knowledge in the analytical sciences which is in high demand.
Having successfully passed the first semester modules, you will be able to single out an exciting subject for your Master‘s thesis. This will deepen your knowledge and set the course for your occupational career. Be it in the chemical industry or at a research institute or authority: your career opportunities will be excellent.

Academic Qualification:

After graduating, you are eligible to enrol for a Ph.D. programme.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must possess either the International Bachelor of Applied Chemistry degree (Hochschule Fresenius) or an academic degree in an appropriate field of study (240 ECTS Credit Points, minimum grade: good). If your degree comprises less than 240 points, then any missing competences can be obtained through a specially designed bridge course. For further details, please contact our examination office. The aptitude and motivation of applicants will be assessed in a personal interview.

Programme Language:

This course is held completely in English. Therefore, a good command of English must be demonstrated with a TOEFL certificate of 85 points internet-based or 213 points computer-based.
