Infections rank among the major causes for mortality and morbidity worldwide and confront society with major public health challenges.
To solve these challenges well trained academics are required in basic research, clinical and pharmaceutical research and development, in teaching and education, in diagnostics, epidemiology and in health care policy.
Five reasons for the program Infection Biology (IB)
- IB is for students who want to focus on research in infection
- IB is specially designed for international students, therefore courses will be held in English
- IB provides an interdisciplinary university education
- IB connects theory and practical courses with project orientated work
- The University of Lübeck is a small campus university with short distances
Program Content Infection Biology
The master degree program provides an interdisciplinary university education in infection biology. It addresses graduates in life science, biology and related disciplines as well as human and veterinary medicine. Courses will held be in English.
Lectures, seminars and internships offer intensive education in microbiology, immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology and clinics (pathology, diagnostics, therapy, prophylaxis) with a focus on infection biology as well as in epidemiology of infectious diseases and their agents (bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi) and the methods used in these fields.
Furthermore, students will gain competence in scientific communication in English, documentation, presentation and publication of scientific results, critical handling of published work, writing of grant applications, as well as in independent and interdisciplinary research. Students have the opportunity to choose their priority area from different ones, which are on offer. Lecturers, readers and professors are also active researchers offering direct insight in ongoing projects. For internships, students have the opportunity to choose their laboratory in Germany or abroad, in academics or industry. We will provide a comprehensive list of cooperating laboratories and support in finding the proper location that fits the student´s interests.
The Master Program in Infection Biology prepares for a career in science but also offers the possibility to enter clinical and pharmaceutical research and development, university teaching and education as well as training of technical staff.
Graduates are also prepared for applied areas such as diagnostics, surveillance and epidemiology of infectious diseases as well as health care policy.
For a career in academia or in a company, the master diploma should be followed by a doctoral thesis, for which best conditions are offered by the institutes of our university and the Research Center Borstel.
In 1973, the Universität zu Lübeck became an independent scientific institution in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. We offer degree programmes in medicine, computer science, engineering, and natural sciences. Interdisciplinary programmes encompassing natural sciences, computer science, and medicine offer practical and up-to-date education underpinned by the highest standard of healthcare. The conditions here for developing and applying innovative technologies, diagnostics, and treatments are ideal, as a result of teamwork among faculties, and collaboration with other institutions in Lübeck, the Research Center Borstel, the Medical Laser Centre, and local businesses. Teaming-up with national and international research institutes bolsters the quality of research at our university, currently defined by two special fields of research.
Compared with other universities, the Universität zu Lübeck is small, with just 3,400 students – but boasts a good teacher-student ratio. The high standings of our computer science and medicine students underscores the high standard of our teaching and education.
