Interdisciplinary - International - Practice-oriented

The curriculum of the Bucerius Master of Law and Business is oriented along a single major theme – the founding and development of an enterprise – as it perfectly illustrates the relationship between legal and business issues.

By using the development of an enterprise as its structural backbone, the curriculum creates synergies among its various modules. After one year you are able to understand the legal and economic dimensions of the

  • Realization of an entrepreneurial idea
  • Founding of an enterprise
  • Transformation of the enterprise into a publicly-held company
  • Internationalization of a company
  • Merger with or acquisition of another firm
  • Restructuring of a firm with financial difficulties

The program takes a comparative law and business approach, allowing you to understand the similarities and differences between different legal and business systems.

Electives, Internship and Thesis

There are several ways in which students can specialize within the one-year curriculum, namely through the choice of the:

  • elective modules
  • 8-week internship
  • topic of the Master's thesis

Two degree options: LL.M. or MLB

Depending on their specialization, students will be awarded one of two possible degrees:

  • Master of Law and Business (MLB) - available to all students
  • Master of Laws (LLM) - available to students with a first degree in law

Specialization in International Commercial Arbitration and Entrepreneurship

Regardless of the chosen track, students will follow various courses together as a group. This interdisciplinary way of learning enriches both classroom discussion and knowledge transfer.

The Specialization in International Commercial Arbitration can only be combined with the LLM degree.

The Specialization in Entrepreneurship can be combined with the LLM and the MLB degree.

Challenging perspectives: Studium generale

Bucerius Law School is committed to educating young professionals who look beyond their social and intellectual horizon. That is why, in addition to the academic curriculum, the program includes a Studium generale which covers topics other than law or business as well as a Social Project.

LL.M. or MLB: One program - two degree options

Depending on your previous education, the program offers two possible degrees: a Master of Law and Business (MLB) and a Master of Laws in Law and Business (LLM).

Students with a first degree in law

Students with a first degree in law have the choice between either of the two degrees.

LLM Degree:

To obtain the LLM degree, students must successfully complete Module 1a - Foundations of Business and at least one law elective. Students who choose a second law elective have to complete a business-related internship. Students who choose an interdisciplinary or business elective have to complete a law-related internship. The Master’s Thesis also has to have a legal focus.

MLB Degree:

To obtain the MLB degree, students must successfully complete Module 1a - Foundations of Business and at least one interdisciplinary elective. The Master’s Thesis can be interdisciplinary or business-related.

Students who want to write an interdisciplinary Master’s Thesis and choose a law elective as their second elective module have to complete a business-related internship.

Students who want to write a business-related Master’s Thesis have to complete either two interdisciplinary electives or one interdisciplinary and one law elective. The internship has to be business-related.
Students with a first degree in business

Students with a first degree in business can only obtain the MLB degree

In order to do so, they must successfully complete Module 1b - Foundations of Law and at least one interdisciplinary elective. The Master’s Thesis can be interdisciplinary or business-related.

Students who want to write a business-related Master’s Thesis and choose a business elective as their second elective module, have to complete a law-related internship.

Students who want to write an interdisciplinary Master’s Thesis have to complete either two interdisciplinary electives or one interdisciplinary and one business elective. The internship has to be business-related.
