European Society, Politics and Culture

Europeanization is an on-going complex and multidimensional process closely connected to European identities and culture(s). The Euroculture Programme Erasmus Mundus MA Programm Euroculture qualifies students to analyse various dimensions of the European process of integration in a global context and to undertake an elaborate study on the past, present and future of European cultural, historical and political development.

General Information

In the Euroculture Programme, graduates acquire practical skills and interpersonal competences, which are based on a thorough and problem-oriented understanding of crucial topics and developments in Europe. These are discussed and analysed in an interdisciplinary setting that conveys a deep knowledge of historical perspectives, political aspects, social relations, legal issues and religious traditions. In addition to a comprehensive knowledge of European matters, students master specific methodological competences ("Eurocompetences") such as project management, intercultural communication, research and professional project proposal writing.

The Euroculture Programme is an inter-university project. Students spend the first semester at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. In the second semester students study at one of the host universities of the Euroculture consortium:

  • Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (the Netherlands),
  • Universidad de Deusto (Spain),
  • Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie (Poland),
  • Univerzita Palackého v Olomouci (the Czech Republic),
  • Université de Strasbourg (France),
  • Università degli Studi di Udine (Italy),
  • or Uppsala Universitet (Sweden).

In the third semester student can either choose a professional track (internship) at any organization/institution as long as the placement is relevant for the Euroculture themes, or a research track at one of Euroculture Consortium universities based on the student’s research and/or professional interests.

Our non-European partner universities for the research track are:

  • University of Pune (India)
  • Indiana University (USA)
  • University of Osaka (Japan)
  • Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

Mandatory mobility between two or more consortium universities gives students the possibility of gaining diverse academic and personal experiences, which enrich the students’ level of intercultural competence, establish broad professional networks and increase their options on the global job market.

Euroculture offers students:

  • Enrollment over two years (4 semesters)  in a Master’s Course (120 ECTS) which has been recognised by the European Commission as an "Erasmus Mundus Master of Excellence"
  • An transdisciplinary approach involving the disciplines of European and Cultural Studies, History, Political Science, International Relations, Theology, Philosophy, Anthropology, Ethnology, Philology and Literature
  • Study in an international joint degree-programme within a consortium of eight European and four non-European universities
  • A well-established mobility scheme that enables you to study at two or more different universities within the consortium
  • The chance to study in an international environment, learn other languages, engage in intercultural dialogue and experience different cultural practices

Euroculture enables students to:

  • Pursue a professional or a research track in order to deepen their research skills and the theoretical knowledge or to acquire relevant professional skills and competencies
  • Participate in an international summer school (Intensive Programme) of ten days. The location of the IP rotates around the partner universities
  • Conduct research on the European political, cultural and social Integration process with its different dimensions. Important Keywords would be transculturality, citizenship, identity, mobility, or collective memory
  • Study Europe’s relations to and the mutual exchanges with the wider world. Due to longstanding special cooperation with the respected non-European universities in the consortium and in Göttingen in particular, the main regional focuses will be on the Near East / India as well as North America.
  • Participate in the Master Thesis colloquium during the fourth semester that helps to systematize, organize and streamline the student’s research process.

Opportunities and Perspectives

The Programme prepares graduates to work in the European, international or national context where the knowledge of present European and European Union institutions is relevant. It also provides skills and qualifications that enable students to embark on doctoral studies.

The programme qualifies students for careers in the fields of:

  • European institutions and non-governmental organizations
  • Education and research institutions, think-tanks
  • Embassies and consulates
  • Media, journalism, publishing, libraries
  • Public relations
  • Legal and personnel departments in international companies
  • Political parties, foundations and associations
  • City and regional planning, local and regional cultural projects
  • Cultural management
  • Museums and exhibitions
  • Tourism
  • Immigrant organizations
  • Religious and church-based institutions
