Charakteristik und Ziele

Program goals

The Bachelor program in Business Economics at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg is an internationally recognized 3-year degree program that provides you with the skills and the knowledge needed for a career in an international setting.

The program is designed to give students a solid understanding of business management, economics and quantitative methods that can readily be applied in an international environment. Later on, you may specialize by choosing from a broad range of electives.

Applicants to our program have a genuine interest in business management and economics and possess an excellent proficiency in English. International applicants bring the desire to immerse themselves in a multilingual environment and to benefit from a strong command of the German language by the end of their studies.

Halle and its University

Halle is an old town located in the heart of Germany. Situated two hours south of Berlin it is considered the cultural capital of its state, Sachsen-Anhalt. An opera house, two symphony orchestras, numerous clubs and bars with live music, theatres, cinemas, etc. are there to entertain you.

Like the town, its university – Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg – looks back on a long tradition. Despite its name it is a secular university which offers a complete range of studies in law, economics, humanities and the sciences. Currently the university has more than 20,000 students who are enrolled in 9 different faculties.

As a student you have access to many classes offered by other faculties that are encouraged to enhance your understanding of economics and business management with insights from different fields. You can furthermore become involved in a large number of extracurricular activities ranging from university sports to representing the student body as an elected member of the student council.

Throughout the first 4 semesters, the entire curriculum is taught in English and includes mandatory language classes depending on your individual background. In the final 2 terms you may then specialize by choosing from a variety of both English and German electives and by completing your seminar as well as your Bachelor thesis.

The study program is based on the academic standards of the European Community and courses are valued according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Credits obtained are therefore transferable to and from other European universities.

The content, learning objectives, workload, requirements and prerequisites of specific modules are detailed in the module catalogue and in the study and examination regulations, respectively.



As a student of our international program you must complete an internship in the course of your studies. With your profound knowledge of economics and management skills along with an excellent command of English, German and usually a third language, you will be an invaluable asset to both companies in and around Halle such as BMW, Porsche, Dell, DHL and to major consulting/auditing firms as well as to other institutions and companies in Germany and abroad. To gain additional experience abroad, you may also spend a semester at a university of your choice or at one of our established partner universities.


Admission requirements

All applicants must be eligible to attend a higher education institution in Germany. For German applicants, eligibility is established by their Abitur. International applicants must have their eligibility determined by uni-assist e.V. – see below.

Qualified applicants who are currently ineligible to attend a university in Germany may attain eligibility by successfully passing an assessment test at the preparatory college. International applicants may apply for a foundation year at the preparatory college to obtain access to higher education in Germany.

The following documents must be submitted by all applicants:

  • Certified copy of your high school diploma
  • Official transcripts
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Motivation letter
  • Proof of your proficiency in English by means of an internationally recognized test result such as
    • TOEFL iBT: minimum score of 80
    • IELTS: minimum score of 6.0
    • UNIcert II
    • Abitur: minimum score of 10

Personal requirements

Applicants to our program have a genuine interest in business management and economics and possess an excellent proficiency in English. International applicants bring the desire to immerse themselves in a multilingual environment and to benefit from a strong command of the German language by the end of their studies.



The admission to the Business Economics program is currently
limited by quota (Uni-NC).

  • Applicants who obtained their access to higher education in Germany (i.e. Abitur) must submit their application to MLU until 15.7.
  • Applicants who obtained their access to higher education abroad (i.e. high school diploma or A-levels) must apply via until 30.6.

Please note that the MLU reevaluates the quota of its study programs on an annual basis. Please check around May to see if the quota for your program of choice has been lifted or maintained.

Applicants will be selected by the qualifications displayed in their submitted documents. As there will be no personal interviews during the selection procedure, we encourage you to dilligently fill out your application to fully reflect your eligibility for the program.

All the required documents will be used to calculate your total score and position on our ranking.

  • An authenticated copy of your secondary school diploma, e.g. Abitur, A-Levels, etc.
  • Official transcripts including an explanation of the grading system. The transcripts must indicate the total number of years the applicant attended school.
  • Authenticated copies of all previously earned academic degrees and transcripts
  • TOEFL or IELTS score proving the applicant's good command of English. Exceptions are made for applicants from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, Australia & New Zealand. Other nationalities cannot be regarded as a proof of your English proficiency.
  • Optional:other references, internships or academic achievements

  • TOEFL score (MLU TOEFL code: 8232), IELTS score or advanced English class (Leistungskurs) during the A-levels with an average of 2.0 (at least 10 points) proving the applicant's good command of the English language.

Credit Transfer

If you would like to transfer from another university, you will need to apply as stated above.

It is generally possible to enroll in a higher semester of the program and to transfer a limited amount of credits from your previous studies. Decisions about a credit transfer will be made on an individual basis and are at the discretion of the respective professors at the MLU.
